# 1914-D Penny Value: What Yours Is Worth

By Mike Moore. Published Oct 8, 2026. Updated Oct 8, 2026. Canonical page: https://dimehound.app/coins/1914-d-penny-value/

A genuine 1914-D penny is worth about $207 in worn Good condition, $344 in Very Fine and about $2,683 in uncirculated. Denver struck 1,193,000. Many fakes are altered 1944-D cents, and the giveaway is the VDB initials on Lincoln's shoulder, which a real 1914-D does not have.

- **Mintage:** 1,193,000.
- **Mint mark:** D, under the date.
- **Shoulder initials:** VDB was added to Lincoln's shoulder in 1918. A real 1914-D has a plain shoulder.

## What to look for

- Check the shoulder. Tiny VDB letters at the bottom edge of Lincoln's shoulder mean the coin is 1918 or later, so it is not a real 1914-D.
- Check the spacing in the date. On altered 1944-D cents the gap between the 9 and the 1 looks too wide.
- Look for tool marks or a color change around the D.

## Fakes and lookalikes

- Altered 1944-D cents with the first 4 removed to read 1914. The VDB on the shoulder gives it away.
- Added mint marks: a D attached to a Philadelphia 1914. Look for seams around the D.
- Buy certified only at these prices.

## FAQ

### How much is a 1914-D penny worth?

About $207 in Good, $344 in Very Fine and $2,683 in MS60.

### Is a 1914 penny with no mint mark valuable?

It is a better date than most wheat cents but far less valuable than the 1914-D.

### How can I tell a real 1914-D?

No VDB on the shoulder, natural date spacing and a D that matches the rest of the coin. Have it certified if it passes.
