What to look for
- Check the edge. A 1964 dime has a solid silver edge, no copper stripe.
- The mint mark is on the back, left of the torch. 1964 dimes with no mark are from Philadelphia.
- On a 1964-D, look at the words on the back with a loupe. The doubled die reverse shows clear doubling on the lettering, most easily on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
- For high grade coins, the horizontal bands on the torch matter. Fully split bands (Full Bands) add a big premium.
Fakes and lookalikes
- Machine doubling, a flat shelf-like smear next to letters, is common and adds no value. True doubled die letters are rounded and separated.
- Clad dimes from 1965 and later weigh 2.27 grams. A silver dime weighs 2.50 grams.
