What to look for
- Check the edge first. A 1964 quarter has a solid silver edge. A 1965 or later quarter shows a copper stripe.
- Find the mint mark on the back, below the wreath. Nothing there means Philadelphia.
- Grade matters only for coins that look new. Worn coins all sell close to the same price.
- Sharp, unworn coins with full luster are the ones worth sending to PCGS or NGC.
Fakes and lookalikes
- Counterfeit 1964 quarters are not common because the premium is small. The bigger risk is a 1965 or later clad quarter in a roll of 'silver'. Check every edge.
- A silver quarter weighs 6.25 grams. A clad quarter weighs 5.67 grams. A kitchen scale that reads to 0.01 g settles it.
